- Hold at least a bachelor’s degree from a board-approved accredited institution with an accounting degree or a board-approved course of study.
- There are different levels of education requirements based on major. For instance, applicants can have a graduate degree in accounting, or an MBA with varying concentrations in accounting, or a bachelor’s in a relevant major with similarly varying concentrations in accounting and finance. For a more thorough breakdown of requirements for exam applicants, visit the National Association for the State Boards of Accountancy and the DOPL.
Requirements to be issued a certificate (license):
- Pass the CPA exam.
- Complete the AICPA’s professional ethics course. A candidate does not have to wait until he or she passes the CPA exam before completing the ethics exam.
- Pass the Utah Law and Rules exam. The exam is available at the PSI Exams Online website.
- Earn 2,000 hours (one year) of accounting experience obtained under the supervision of a licensed CPA.
Continuing Education Requirements
Utah CPAs are required to complete 80 hours of qualifying continued professional education (CPE) every two years for biennial license renewal. CPAs can obtain CPE credit hours from board-approved group study, self study, or on-site training programs. The board allows and determines credits for published books and articles with the maximum credit being 25 percent of total required hours. There is no ethics requirement.
