Educational Requirements
CPAs in Pennsylvania are overseen by the Pennsylvania State Board of Accountancy and must meet the education requirements laid out by the board. To be certified, applicants must have earned a baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited college or university and completed 150 semester hours of education. At least 24 semester hours of the 150 must be in accounting and auditing, business law, finance, or tax subjects, and an additional 12 must be taken in accounting, auditing, and tax subjects.
Salary
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2011, accountants and auditors in Pennsylvania earned an annual average wage of $70,650. The concentration of accountants in Pennsylvania is slightly higher than the national average, and the state has the fifth-highest employment level for accountants in the nation, with 51,730 employed in Pennsylvania. The job outlook for the accounting industry nationally is good, with growth expected into 2020. Accountants who become CPAs tend to have an advantage in the job market.
CPA Licensing in Pennsylvania
Applicants who wish to become CPAs in Pennsylvania must be at least 18 years old, be of good moral character, and meet the education and experience requirements . Licenses must be renewed every two years. To be licensed as a CPA in the state, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Complete a baccalaureate or higher degree from a college or university accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
- Complete 150 semester hours of post-secondary education
- Complete 24 semester hours of the 150 total hours in accounting and auditing, business law, finance, or tax subjects
- Complete an additional 12 semester hours of the 150 total hours in accounting, auditing, and tax subjects
- Have one year of experience totaling 1,600 hours under the supervision of an individual with a current license to practice public accounting
Continuing Education Requirements
Active CPAs must renew their licenses every two years and must complete 80 hours of continuing professional education within each two-year period. Classes should either come from the State Board of Accountancy, from program sponsors approved by NASBA, or a program sponsor approved by another state that has substantial equivalency with Pennsylvania. At least 16 hours of the 80 must be in Accounting and Auditing, eight must be in Tax, and four must be in Ethics. Applicants can’t have more than 40 of the 80 hours in individual study, and must earn at least 20 hours of continuing education each year.
