Educational Requirements
The educational requirements to sit for the CPA exam and obtain licensure in Delaware are defined by the Delaware State Board of Accountancy. To sit for the exam, Delaware candidates must have a bachelor’s degree or higher and at least 150 hours of college education that includes 24 hours of accounting. Additional requirements vary depending on whether you are seeking a CPA permit to practice or a CPA certificate.
Salary
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 4,520 accountants employed in Delaware in 2011. The state also had one of the highest concentrations of accounting jobs in the nation, with a higher-than-average location quotient of 1.32. Delaware accountants made an average annual salary of $66,100.
CPA Licensing in Delaware
The first step toward becoming a CPA in Delaware is to take the Uniform CPA Exam. To do so, all first-time candidates must complete the following:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher.
- At least 150 hours of college education, including 24 hours of accounting covering the following subjects: financial accounting, auditing, and taxation.
Delaware awards both a CPA permit to practice and a CPA certificate. The CPA permit allows individuals to practice accountancy in the state, but the CPA certificate does not. Those seeking the CPA permit to practice must meet the educational requirements listed above and the following few steps:
- Complete one year of accounting experience at a firm working in government, commerce, industry, academia, or public practice.
- Pass the CPA exam.
- Pass the AICPA Ethics exam for initial licensure.
Continuing Education Requirements
To maintain an active CPA license in Delaware, accountants must complete 80 hours of continuing professional education every biennial renewal and report it by January. For more information about renewal applications and the renewal cycle, visit the Delaware State Board of Accountancy’s website.
Accounting Jobs in Delaware
Despite being the second-smallest state in the U.S., Delaware has a lot of employment opportunities for experienced accountants. Delaware accountants can find work in a variety of fields, such as cost and capital accounting, finance and insurance, tax preparation, and health care. More than 50% of U.S. publicly traded corporations are headquartered in Delaware because of its flexible corporation laws, so accountants, especially CPAs, will have many options in the private sector.
