Educational Requirements

To become a CPA in Connecticut, you must first fulfill the educational requirements as defined by the Connecticut State Board of Accountancy. To sit for the CPA exam, candidates must have a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a Board-accepted college or university, as well as an accounting concentration. CPA licensure requires the degree mentioned above and 150 semester hours of college education, including a minimum of 36 hours in accounting, 30 hours in economics and business administration, and at least 60 hours in general education.

Salary

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 15,230 accountants working in Connecticut in 2011. The Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk metropolitan area also had one of the highest concentrations of accounting jobs in the nation. In the same year, Connecticut accountants made an average annual salary of $72,590.

CPA Licensing in Connecticut

The first step toward becoming a licensed CPA in Connecticut is taking the Uniform CPA Exam. To do so, all first-time candidates need to have the following educational requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent) from a regionally accredited and Board-approved college or university.
  • Accounting concentration, or at least 36 hours of accounting and related subjects, such as business law, economics, and finance.

To be awarded a CPA license in Connecticut, candidates must complete the following:

  • Pass the CPA exam.
  • Complete 150 semester hours of college education, including a minimum of 36 hours in accounting, 30 hours in economics and business administration, and at least 60 hours in general education.
  • Complete two years of accounting experience in the fields of public practice, government, or industry; must be under direct supervision of a CPA in good standing.
  • Pass the AICPA Ethics exam for initial licensure.

Continuing Education Requirements

To continue practicing public accounting, Connecticut CPAs are required to complete 40 hours of continuing professional education each year. It needs to be completed every fiscal year (July 1 through June 30), and reported to the Board by December 31 every year.
