What is accreditation? According to the U.S. Department of Education, accreditation is the recognition that an institution maintains standards requisite for its graduates to gain admission to other reputable institutions of higher learning or to achieve credentials for professional practice. This includes professional accreditation, which recognizes that your institution adheres to the acceptable guidelines wherein a graduate would be able to competently practice within the field upon graduation. Easier for institutions to obtain is regional accreditation which is dependent on where the school is located. To ensure that your degree will be respected by potential employers, you’ll need to earn it from an accredited institution.

Two additional criteria when looking into your school’s accreditation is whether the accreditor is approved by the U.S. Department of Education, and how long the school has had full accreditation from the accreditor. For a comprehensive list of accredited institutions, visit the Department of Education’s database.

Different disciplines may require accreditation from more than one organization. For example, the best nursing schools are accredited by both the CCNE (Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education) and NLNAC (National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission).

In some instances, there can be more prestige associated with some accreditors than others. For MBA programs, accreditation from AACSB – International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) is internationally recognized and considered to be the highest standard of business school accreditation. When looking for MBA graduates, employers and recruiters will look for degrees earned by programs accredited by AACSB – International.

If earning your online degree in counseling, you’ll want to enroll in a program that is accredited by CACREP, the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Education Programs. For a degree in education, your program should be accredited by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC).

For specifically online institutions, your school should be accredited by the Distance Education Training Council (DETC), which has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education since 1955.

Individual states will also have accrediting bodies. You’ll also want to be sure that your institution is accredited by one of these six regional accreditors of higher education:

New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC)

North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA)

Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (NWCCU)

Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (MSA)

It’s no secret that college isn’t exactly easy and that you have to work really hard for your grades, especially if you want good ones. If you work hard to earn A’s, chances are you’re going to have to work just as hard to keep them. Getting an A on an exam or heavily weighed project is an accomplishment, but if you want to see overall A’s in your classes, you’ll have to keep up the determination and discipline because one bad grade could blow your chances of ending up with an A at the end of the semester.

Keeping your grades up should start with studying moderately and not procrastinating on assignments or studying for exams. If you know you have an exam coming up or an assignment due, do not wait until the last minute to complete it. You’ve probably heard that a billion times, but doing your work slowly and with plenty of time to correct errors and get input from your professors or tutors really is the way to go. Leaving studying until the last minute means that you may not be retaining everything you read and that you may run out of time to study everything you needed to study. The same goes for assignments- doing some every day or every other day means you get to look over your work, get fresh ideas, and can do finishing touches at the end to help with the overall finalized product.

Paying attention in class should also be a no-brainer. Paying attention in class is probably the best way to learn about material that is covered. Not only does paying attention in class mean you’ll be able to take notes on material and important concepts your professor is lecturing about, but it also serves as a way to make sure you’re updated on assignments, quizzes, research papers, exams, and other assignments in your class that could affect your grades. Reading book material before class is also a good way to be able to relate to the material your professor is covering, which may help you to recognize and understand it better.

Testing yourself with exercises at the end of your chapter textbooks and attending study and tutorial sessions are good ways of ensuring that you understand the material covered in class. If you understand the material covered in class, chances are the work you produce in projects and assignments will be more than satisfactory and you will be prepared for quizzes and exams, which in most cases are large parts of your overall grade. Proper sleep and rest is also important in getting good grades. While you may think pulling an all-nighter is an effective means of studying, this will likely leave you tired and unable to function properly. Not cramming your studies and studying at decent hours and times is the best way to study and prepare for an exam.

Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter have been the center of controversy in the workplace since their creation. This is because a majority of policies state that an employee must be a representative of the company. If an employer sees that you are an ill representation by posting inappropriate photos and status updates (even though it is your personal profile), employers may have grounds to fire you. In other instances, inappropriate social networking sites are also the reason why so many applicants never get hired or even a callback for an interview. Thus it’s always important to clean up your profile and monitor what you post. And that’s why it’s also never a good idea to add people from the workplace onto social media sites. But while it is known that social networking sites can get you fired, did you know that if used properly they can actually get you hired? To find out how, continue reading below.

The first thing you want to do is create different "accounts;" one should be your "personal" profile and the other your "business" profile. On your personal profile you want to make sure that you only be-friend your actual friends and that all of your privacy settings are set at the highest strengths. Even if your photos, statuses and tweets are already protected from outside sources from viewing them, double check again. Sometimes when media sites update their systems, your settings get changed.

If working on Twitter, make sure that your business profile is not private. This way if you tweet, others will be able to see it. When private accounts tweet public accounts and the public account is not following the private account, the public account cannot see it. So once again "follow" those that are in the industry, ask for advice, message them or tweet them whenever an interesting topic arises to put yourself out there and get you a job.
