Educational Requirements
The educational requirements for taking the Uniform CPA Examination and becoming a licensed CPA in Alabama are defined by the Alabama State Board of Public Accountancy. Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and have completed a total of 150 semester hours, 33 of which must come from accounting classes. Those who have a non-accounting major, or its equivalent, must complete two or more years in public accounting in order to be approved by the Board to sit for the exam.
Salary
According to the “http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes132011.htm”>Bureau of Labor Statistics report, there were 14,090 accountants employed in Alabama in 2011. The average annual wage for Alabama accountants was $62,270. Certification and specialization in a particular accounting field can significantly improve job prospects.
CPA Licensing in Alabama
CPAs in Alabama are certified by the Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants. One of the first steps in seeking CPA licensure is to determine your eligibility to take or retake the examination. Applicants for the Alabama CPA exam must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Must be a U.S. citizen; or a person who is legally present with appropriate documentation from the federal government; or a person who is at least 19 years old, has duly declared his/her intent to become a citizen, and is of good moral character.
- Hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
- Non-accounting majors must complete two or more years of work in public accountancy after earning degree.
- Complete a total of 150 semester hours or 225 quarter hours of postsecondary education.
- Have a concentration in accounting or the equivalent as determined by the board. Must meet one of the following requirements for a concentration equivalent:
- Completed at least 33 hours in accounting (excluding introductory classes) at the undergraduate and/or graduate level which includes: nine hours in financial accounting, six hours in auditing, six hours in taxation, three hours in management accounting, three hours in governmental and not-for-profit accounting, six hours in accounting electives, and at least three hours in business law, concentrating primarily on the Uniform Commercial Code. Graduate also must complete at least 27 hours in business courses (other than accounting courses) from a wide variety of subject areas.
- Candidate has a graduate degree in accounting from a program that is accredited in accounting by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), or a comparable board-recognized accrediting organization.
- Candidate has a graduate degree from a program that is accredited in business by the AACSB, or a comparable board-recognized accrediting organization, and has completed a course of instruction that meets all of the requirements specified above in No. 1.
Alabama is a two-tier state, meaning a certificate is issued upon passing the exam, but a license/permit to practice is issued when the experience requirement is completed. Requirements for licensure:
- Pass the exam.
- Complete one year in public accounting or two years in industry, business, government, or college teaching.
- Pass AICPA Ethics Exam for initial licensure.
Continuing Education Requirements
Alabama CPAs are required to continue their professional education by completing 40 hours of acceptable continuing professional education each fiscal year. Eight of the 40 hours must be in accounting and auditing. Credit is given based on program length. Accounting Jobs in Alabama
Alabama accountants will have the best employment opportunities in accounting and bookkeeping services, management and technical consulting services, and architectural and engineering services. According to BLS, Montgomery, Ala. had one of the highest concentrations of jobs and location quotients in accounting in 2011.
